Convergence – It will change the way you work

E-Series Inspired this entry with a discussion about Series 60 clients that interface with enterprise phone systems.

This topic is the start of a bigger picture that I am very passionate about; Namely convergence. I had planned to blog about this, but the E-Series article has prompted me.

Convergence can mean a lot of things to a lot of people, but here we are really focusing on the convergence of mobile and enterprise telephony. Perhaps an even more remarkable convergence is happening in businesses throughout the country- Voice delivered as an application on the existing data network … but that is really another story.

I work in the connectivity and VoIP industries and I think that the uptake of current (and near-future) converged technology is very exciting. No longer are users a slave to the technology, we are now able to give full control to the user: Where, when and how will you accept calls and who will you accept them from?

Another part of the bigger picture that’s really useful, I think, is unified messaging. When someone leaves me a voicemail on my work number, I can choose to have it delivered to my email which is also on my e61 via ‘push’ Exchange sync.

As I said, it’s an area that I am really interested in, so no doubt I will post again … perhaps in more detail – let me know your thoughts.
